Written by Matthew J. Buettner, cbs4denver.com
LITTLETON, Colo. (CBS4) ― With Brandon Marshall benched and Eddie Royal out with an injury for the Chiefs game, it was Broncos receiver Jabar Gaffney's chance to shine and he delivered with the best game of his career.

Although the Broncos lost 44-24, Gaffney set career highs in receptions and receiving yards with 14 catches for 213 yards. His 213 yards was the second most by a receiver in the NFL this season and only 1 yard shy of Shannon Sharpe's franchise record.

"It wasn't the game plan, but we knew going in that we all had to step up in Brandon's and Eddie's absence and I wanted to take it upon my shoulders to make plays," Gaffney said on Monday's Comcast Broncos Live!

After hauling in 10 catches in the first half, Gaffney said he was well aware he had a shot at Marshall's single-game NFL reception record (21), set on Dec. 13 in Indianapolis.

"I knew that at halftime," Gaffney said laughing.

Coach Josh McDaniels says he appreciates Gaffney's game because he's versatile and has all the routes down pat.

"I was running all of them. In this offense you've got to be able to move around," Gaffney said. "I know all the positions because if anything happens guys have to move around, so knowing that I was able to step in and play those roles."

With the workload Gaffney saw on Sunday, he said he did start feeling tired at times.

"Yeah, I got tired out there a couple times but we did a great job of conditioning and practicing that situation, so I got through it."

Gaffney played for the New England Patriots while McDaniels was the offensive coordinator there.

"(Coach and I) had a great relationship in New England and he liked my work. I liked how he was as a coordinator and when he became head coach I wanted to come out here and play for him."

Gaffney commented on how McDaniels deals with players after his controversial move of benching his star receiver in Marshall and tight end Tony Scheffler.

"Coach handles the business the way he thinks he should. He has a lot of the same qualities that (New England Head Coach Bill Belichick) has but he's his own man and he's doing it the way he thinks he needs to do it and we're behind him."

Gaffney finished the season with 54 catches for 732 yards and 2 touchdowns.
