Former Broncos Rod Smith said that he's not entirely surprised that the feud between quarterback Jay Cutler and head coach Josh McDaniels has grown to such epic proportions. Smith says that in the high-pressure arena of the NFL, this type of conflict is more common that most fans might think.
"It's feelings," Smith said. "It's humans involved. Just because you're an athlete, you're not a robot. Just because you're a coach you're not a robot. You have feelings, and sometimes our feelings get in the way of logic."
In this case logic would have dictated that the wunderkind coach and the Pro Bowl quarterback sit down and settle their disputes, because both men will be better working together than they will be apart. But "feelings" have gotten in the way of a potential reconciliation between Cutler and McDaniels.
The situation came to a head this week when Broncos owner Pat Bowlen tried to contact Cutler and couldn't get a return phone call.
The frustrated owner said in a statement: "Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos. We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded."
Smith said that this dispute didn't have to descend this far. He said that if he were Cutler he would have viewed this trade talk in an entirely different light.
"I would probably be a little hurt, honestly," Smith said. "But I'm like, 'I'm a very valuable person.' They need six or seven other good football players to win games, and they're willing to get rid of one to get six or seven other ones. That means you're pretty valuable. No one probably ever portrayed it to [Cutler] that way. As compared to, 'oh they're trying to get rid of you. They don't want you there.'"
Now it appears that the Broncos have finally concluded that they don't want Cutler, and Smith said that this is a disappointing decision, and it's probably damaging to both sides.
"The Broncos had a lot invested in Jay, and Jay had a lot invested in this community," Smith said. "I'm a Jay Cutler fan. I saw him when he came into the league and what he'd grown into, and thinking we're going to have that
and I say 'we' as in the city and this community. And then we get a new coach, [who] is a great mind which we needed as well, but now those two don't see eye to eye and that's tough for the fans."
